Getting Started with Tailoring

How the feature generates job-specific resumes and cover letters for each application, and what's included with your credits. Explains why preparing your base resume first gives the best results.

What is Tailoring for resumes and cover letters?

Tailoring is a feature that generates job-specific application materials for each role you apply to. Using your profile information and the job posting itself, it creates:

  • A resume to the role's requirements.

  • A cover letter whenever the application requires one.

This means you’re sending tailored documents instead of the same generic files for every application. You can review what was submitted for any application directly from your dashboard.

Tailored resumes are optional and require the additional tailoring subscription, while cover letters are automatically generated and submitted whenever the job application requests one.

How many tailoring are included in my plan?

You have access to all the tailored cover letters and tailored resumes you need. Tailoring are tied directly to your application credits: each application in your plan (100, 250, 600, 750, 1,000, or 2,000) includes one tailored resume and one tailored cover letter.

If additional application credits are added to your account — for example, due to a technical issue or as another form of compensation — those extra applications will also include their corresponding tailored cover letters and tailored resumes.

Preparing your base resume for best results

To receive fully optimized tailored resumes, we strongly recommend completing and editing the resume generated by our system first. The tailored resumes submitted with each application are based on this resume, so taking the time to review and refine it ensures that all the information you want included will also appear in the tailored versions sent to employers.

Once your resume is ready, click Use for Auto Apply to set it as the default for automated applications.

What if the wrong resume was sent?

Each application is tailored automatically from your base resume, so the version submitted for any job may differ from what you originally uploaded. To review exactly what was sent, open the job from your dashboard and check the Review tab.

If you'd prefer applications to use your original resume instead of a tailored version, you can enable Pause Auto-Tailor in your Preferences. Applications will continue to go out, but with your original resume attached.

If you're asking about the email address that appears on a resume created with Resume Builder, that comes from the Resume Email field in your Preferences — see the Preferences article for details.
